This month, Muslims across the world are observing Ramadan- the sacred month for Muslims. Muslims believe it was during this month that God revealed the first verses of the Quran. As part of the observance, Muslims will fast as explained by the President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Naveed Mangla.

Naveed Mangla, President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community: “When you don’t eat for fourteen hours in a row, and finally when you see food at the end of the day, it teaches you to become humble and it teaches you to become more grateful to God Almighty for having given this food to you and there is other people. You still have this food at your house at the end of the day, you had it at your house throughout the day but there is actually other people in the world that don’t have this and you should be grateful for it because there is really nothing that you have done to deserve this and nor have they don’t anything not to have food so it’s only through the grace of god that he has given you whatever you see in front of you.”

Hipolito Novelo: Do you lose weight during this month because of the fasting?

Naveed Mangla, President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community: “Yes that’s another. There are many scientific and physical and mental benefits of this and as you mention; you end up losing a lot of weight too. So average 10—15 pounds people can easily lose but at the same time people can end up gaining weight too because they were hungry throughout the day and when they open fast they end up eating too much and storing too much in your belly. So, it has both affects; you just have to be careful of how you handle yourself.”

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has about 150 members in Belize.
