An event titled "Media in the Eyes of Victims Freedom of Religion / Belief", held at the Amaris Hotel, Jakarta, on December 14, was attended by the Rev. Palti Panjaitan (SobatKBB Coordinator) representing the churches, Deden Sujana, representing the Ahmadiyah, and Irma Abdurrahman, representing Shiites.

The speakers provided input and their appreciation for the media in news-related to issues of diversity.

In the opening, Ahmad Junaidi, Director of the United Journalists for Diversity (COOL), explained that this activity is an initiative of COOL to make journalists and victims reflect together and evaluate the news on religious freedom during the year 2013.  COOL has done the same thing in the previous year, 2012.  The goal, again, is to build partnerships that are more conducive in the days to come, among minorities or victims with journalists and the media.

Deden Sujana, the Ahmadiyya representative, found throughout the year in 2013, the media appears to have evolved in reporting events surrounding the case of intolerance in the name of religion.  For example, in the case of GKI Yasmin and HKBP Filadelfia, the media has played an active role by generating news that is able to press the government to take action on both cases.  And, similarly, spreading of the news about sealing of al-Misbah mosque belonging to the Ahmadiyah in Bekasi.

Deden acknowledges that it is due to the role of the media, the mosque matter came to be well known, even to the outside world.  Also,  Dedan told how the people there feel happy to be part of the news and a previously unknown area has become famous.  That is how positivity can be spread to the public by the media.

Even so, Deden deplored the attitude of some media that still attaches improper diction in various events related intolerance in the name of religion.  Such as the word "clash" in February 2011 and the case Cikeusik Ahmadiyya Jalsa Salana in May this year in Tasikmalaya.  Though the two events are in fact in the form of attacks on the Ahmadiyya community, not clashes.  For Deden and other Ahmadiyah, the use of the word "clash" is very inappropriate. "The community was the victim of violence, many were severely injured and some even died.  Obviously we were attacked, but the media says we clashed."

Deden alleged that several times he had tried to submit a correction to the journalists it can be distinguished between  attacked and clashes, but journalists did not respond.  Through this forum Deden invited journalists to re-learn empathic languages.  Thus, certain use of diction is wrong, including for example the use of the word "deviant" or "repentance." which are words said by intolerant figures which is very biased and should not have to be displayed.
