Pakistan: KU Islamic Studies Dean gunned down after ‘Wajib-ul-Qatal’ fatwa issued for blasphemy


[S]ome of the teachers had developed a personal grudge against Dr Shakeel Auj over his appointment as Dean Faculty of Islamic Studies and in this connection an FIR was registered in Mubeena Town Police Station.

KARACHI: Unknown gunmen on Thursday opened fire on Dean of Islamic Studies at the University of Karachi Professor Dr Shakeel Auj in Gulshan-e-Iqbal area of Karachi leaving him dead.

According to the Vice Chancellor of Karachi University, Dr Shakeel Auj was critically injured when unidentified assailants ambushed his car near Baitul Mukarram Mosque in Gulshan-e-Iqbal area. He was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

He was on his way to Khana-e-Farhang to attend a ceremony organized to honour him when he was attacked.

‘Wajib-ul-Qatal’ (worthy of murder) fatwa

Quoting the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Pir Muhammad Shah, BBC Urdu revealed that a ‘Fatwa’ (decree) was issued against Dr Shakeel Auj, over accusations of blasphemy by a local seminary, declaring him ‘Wajib-ul-Qatal’ (worthy of murder).

SSP Pir Muhammad Shah further told BBC Urdu that a sms message was also circulated about the Fatwa.

BBC Urdu quoted Superintendent of Police (SP) Abid Qaimkhani as saying that some of the teachers had developed a personal grudge against Dr Shakeel Auj over his appointment as Dean Faculty of Islamic Studies and in this connection an FIR was registered in Mubeena Town Police Station.

It is of note here that a visiting faculty teacher of the same Islamic Studies department, Moulana Masood Baig, had also been killed just a few days back by unknown motorcyclists in North Nazimabad area of Karachi.

Karachi Police Chief has announced the formation of a team to investigate the murder of Dr Shakeel and a Rs2 million reward has also been announced for any information which may lead to arrest of the killers.
