Perspective: Religious intolerance has no place in U.S. | Saadia Ahmed

Having immigrated to America to ensure that my children grow up with the freedom to practice their religion peacefully, it is a watershed moment.

The Sunday children's classes at my mosque were cancelled this weekend because of the armed anti-Islam protests organized by Global Rally for Humanity. Growing up as a member of the persecuted Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Pakistan, this was a dj vu moment. The incident took me back to the time when Ahmadi Muslims in Pakistan were constantly at the mercy of the calls by Mullahs to desecrate our mosques.

Having immigrated to America to ensure that my children grow up with the freedom to practice their religion peacefully, it is a watershed moment. Is America on the same path of religious intolerance as countries like Pakistan, where the calls of hatred and division against a certain sect incite violence and deep prejudice?

Thirty years from now, I hope my American-born children will not need to emigrate from the only country that they affiliate themselves with because they are afraid to call themselves Muslims.
