“We have to help. They are human beings first. Don’t look at the nationality, don’t look at where they are coming from, they are human beings. Think of them as a part of you, then the help will come out from your heart.”

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Women’s Association of Edmonton hosted a fundraising dinner Saturday night to help Syrian refugees build a better future.
“It’s one of the biggest displacements after World War II. We feel for them, we want to help the Syrians integrate into Canada and breathe in peace,” said Nudrat Nasoor, president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Women’s Association of Edmonton West.
Nearly as quickly as the group organized the event, hosted at the Baitul Hadi Mosque at 7005 98 Ave., tickets to the dinner sold out, and Nasoor was glad to see such support from the community.
“From each grain of rice to everything put on the table, everything is all donated,” she said, with volunteers pitching in to help with everything from place settings to preparing the food.
Nasoor said the group was inspired to help after seeing the plight of the millions of refugees that have been displaced.
“Why don’t we give our hands out and bring the Syrians in, give them a hug and say we are here for support, we are here for you, don’t be scared,” she said, adding, “if we were in that type of situation, we would love to be helped.”
Around a 100 people bought tickets for the dinner, with a silent auction stocked with donated works from local artists adding to their donations.
All proceeds from the dinner are going to Humanity First.
Nasoor said she hoped their fundraising efforts would inspire a sense of humanity that would itself promote peace.
“We have to help. They are human beings first. Don’t look at the nationality, don’t look at where they are coming from, they are human beings. Think of them as a part of you, then the help will come out from your heart,” Nasoor said.
Nasoor said the Ahmadiyya Muslim Women’s Association of Edmonton is already planning another fundraising dinner, to be hosted sometime during Ramadan – where Muslims celebrate the revelation of the Qu’ran to the prophet Muhammad during the ninth month of the Islamic Calendar – in the hopes of raising enough funds to sponsor a Syrian refugee family.
