“A lot of the misconceptions people have about Islam is that Islam promotes terrorism; it forces people to convert to Islam; it suppresses the rights to women – none of that is true.”

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Associations (AMYA) has noticed that after the recent terrorist attacks in Jakarta, Istanbul, Sam Bernardino and Paris, many are blaming Islam and the Muslim community.
But terrorism is not the teaching of Islam and that’s why 86 chapters of the AMYA have been working together on a nation-wide campaign called “Demystify Islam,” in hopes of teaching Canadians the true meaning of Islam.
The campaign started in Toronto back in December and came to Lethbridge yesterday.
Shahrukh Abid, a missionary with the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community of the Calgary Chapter spoke at the downtown Lethbridge Public Library yesterday for the “Holy Quran Open House to Demystify Islam.”
“The mission here is to let people know and educate them about what Islam actually teaches. Everything you see on TV is not Islam – ISIS and the terrorists attacks that take place are not a part of Islam,” said Abid.
“It’s up to us as Muslims to let people know what Islam actually teaches.”
“A lot of the misconceptions people have about Islam is that Islam promotes terrorism; it forces people to convert to Islam; it suppresses the rights to women – none of that is true,” said Abid. “Men and women are equal in Islam and terrorism has no place in Islam.”
He said Islam is no a religion of terror and people should not be afraid.
“I know they feel that way because the media highlights that aspect of Islam but it’s not a religion of terror.”
During this campaign, the AMYA will be holding over 135 open houses across the country as members make more than 270 visits to more than 35 towns across Canada.
Abid said so far on this campaign, they’ve received a very good response.
“Canadian people are amazing, they’re very open-minded to Islam. Even though what they see in the media, despite that fact, they come here and educate themselves so that’s very encouraging for us to see how welcoming the general public is towards Islam.
“If people want to learn more about Islam, true Islam, they can visit our website http://www.alislam.org," he added.
