Sri Lanka: Buddhist School Principal favors scarf with pant as uniform for Muslim girls


Usually, Muslim girl students are not allowed to use scarf in the school premises and they are compelled to wear the pant up to the knee similar to the frock of the fellow students.

Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at gifts Holy Qur’an Sinhala Translation to Kurunegala  City Mayor - one of the major cities in the Island

A two member delegation from the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at Sri Lanka (AMJSL) comprising Mr.A. Abdul Aziz, Press Secretary and National Director Faith Outreach - AMJSL and Moulavi K. Muneer Ahmad (Missionary - Pasyala), visited one of the Sri Lanka’s major cities – Kurunegala   recently (24/2/2016) to gift Holy Qur’an Sinhala Translation to Schools in the area.

The delegation met Principal Lakdas De Mel College, Kurunegala and gifted copy of Holy Qur’an Sinhala Translation. He warmly welcomed the delegation and said he is the only school Principal in the Kurunegala Town, allowing Muslim girls student to wear scarf with pant within the school premises, whereas such dress code are not allowed in other schools in this big town.

He went on to say that due to his permission for the Muslim girls to wear their traditional dress code he was compelled to request more allotment for the school uniform clothes from the Educational Department. Unknowingly this fact, the Educational Department made an inquiry for such an additional allotment of clothes for this particular school, the Principal told the authorities about the freedom of practicing religion he had given in, in his school for the Muslim girls.

This wonderful example by the Principal of this particular school drew the attention of Muslims in the area and appreciated the Principal very much in such an extent Muslim leaders visited the school and kissed the hand of this Buddhist Principal.

The delegation met Deputy Commissioner of City Municipal Council, who welcomed the delegation saying that he had the opportunity to see the Jama’at delegation donating Holy Qur’an Sinhala Translation to Cardinal Dr. Malcolm Ranjith in the news bulletin aired by DERANA TV recently. He respectfully accepted the copy of Holy Qur’an Sinhala Translation on behlf of the City Mayor.

The Jama’at delegation visited Public Library Kurunegala and gifted Holy Qur’an Sinhala Translation.

The delegation visited schools in Kurunegala Town namely Maliyadeva Girls’ College, Maliyadeva Model college, St. Anne’s College, Sir John Kotalawela College, Mahinda College, Royal college, Wayamaba, D.S. Senanayake Central College, Uhumeeya, St. Bendase Maha Vidyalaya, Polgahawela and Prakramabahu National School, Polgahawela.

To all of them, along copy of the Sinhala Translation of the Holy Qur’an with some other literatures including Peace Messages in English as well as Sinhala were presented. Moreover, the Sinhala Translation of the book ‘The Philosophy of the Teachings of Islam’ written by Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad – Founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Islam, also presented.
