Faith and common sense: Is it only the life, property, honor of a Muslim unlawful to other Muslims, what about that of others?

It was customary for Hadhrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad (1928-2003), the 4th. Head of the Ahmadiyya Community, to hold sessions in which he responds to questions addressed to him. Presented below is the answer to a question raised at one such session on March 21, 1986 at The London Mosque. (Transcribed and edited by Waseem A. Sayed, PhD.)

QUESTION: In today’s sermon Hazur, you mentioned in connection with Taqwa [righteousness] you quoted a Hadith, a Tradition of the Holy Prophet (sa), where it is said that the life and property and honor of a Muslim is haram or unlawful to other Muslims.  Why is it Sir, specifically mentioned, ‘of Muslims’ not of others, non-Muslims as well?

ANSWER: In other places the non-Muslims are also mentioned, human life, human property. In hajjatul wida, [the Farewell or Last Pilgrimage offered by the Holy Prophet] a general address is made. So it does not mean that that is not mentioned.
Why specifically there because the stress is laid on brotherhood.  You know it culminates into that part of the sentence where it points out that you are brothers.  Because the stress is laid on brotherhood so you are not brothers in that sense with idolaters because there is so much difference between your attitude to God and to truth that you can be treated as one and as human beings but can’t be declared as brothers. That relationship is much closer and much purer. So because of this word I think, the word Muslim is used here, but as far as the general attitude of man to other men is concerned, the same attitude is taught to us towards non-Muslims as well.
