Fiji: Children should be encouraged to report crime

CHILDREN can be informants for the police in efforts to counter crime.

And every child should be taught where to turn to for help when they witness criminal activity, says Ahmadiyya Muslim Primary School headteacher Mohammed Hannif.

Mr Hannif said those were the views expressed by students during an oratory event on crime free with members of the Police Ready Action Unit.


Mr Hannif said the event was to educate students about crime-free and how they could assist in curbing crime in their neighbourhoods.

"Children need to know what is wrong and tell somebody about it, especially things that happen in isolation," he said.

"We must be more vigilant in the fight against crime and it's important that our children are part of the building-up process of raising awareness on our streets and neighbourhoods."

Mr Hannif said parents and teachers needed to work together and update our children about crimes in societies, not only at school but at home too.

"The oratory event encouraged Ahmadiyya students to talk about crime and express their views.

"Children can be informants and report incidents of illegally activity to police or to their elders," he said.

Mr Hannif said it's time for children to speak out about what they see to work efficiently to the fight against crime.
