The executive members of the National Patriotic Students’ Association recently expanded their wings to schools in the Lower River Region (LRR) namely, Tahir Ahmadiyya Senior and Pakalinding Upper Basic School respectively.

These were followed by an inauguration of NAPSA welfare clubs in the hinterland in a bit to unify all Gambian students under one umbrella and also to set the pace in the struggle for academic achievement.

Speaking at the ceremony in the Tahir Ahmadiyya Senior School ground, Muhammed L. Sanyang, the public relations officer of NAPSA said that the inauguration ceremony exemplifies the importance his association attaches to students welfare in promoting mutual trust and understanding in transfer of knowledge and skills to students.

Sanyang revealed that the importance of education and discipline cannot be overemphasized, noting that this has enabled them to familiarize themselves with both students and teachers and have the opportunity of talking to both sides on the need of attaining quality education.

He also spoke on the issue of student-teacher ratio, which he said remains the biggest question to both the government and NAPSA. He observed that the inadequate supply of teachers may impede the attainment of quality education in the country.

“The attainment of quality education calls for concerted efforts and high sense of morale and discipline from students to support school administration in the execution of their functions and duties.”

For his part, Mr. Bah representative of the Region 4 education office also expressed his delight at the ‘magnanimous’ initiative taken by the National Patriotic Students’ Association. He used the occasion to promise that the Education ministry would always endeavour to support NAPSA at any time when the needs arise.

He further advised students to take their studies seriously, so that in the near future they can transform The Gambia into a modern city-state of Africa.

Also speaking at the gathering, vice principal of Tahir Ahmadiyya Muslim Senior Secondary School, Mr. Brima welcomed the association, noting that the association has registered enormous achievement since its inception in 2001.

He further assured NAPSA that his school will always be in touch with NAPSA in order to address students’ needs. Mr Brima further said that the NAPSA welfare clubs would go a long way in enhancing the welfare of the students and most importantly, to form a vibrant body where they can brainstorm on issues regarding their academic progress.

Mr. Lamin Danso, the chairperson of Gambia Teachers Union Region 4 spoke at length on drugs. According to him, the issue of drugs has become the order of the day. Many students, he said, are now being used to peddle drugs. He then went on to advise those students who smoke and involve in drugs dealing to desist from these inhuman and ungodly substances.

Adama Susso, a student of Tahir Ahmadiyya Muslim Senior School also thanked NAPSA for not leaving them in isolation but always endeavouring to fulfill their responsibilities as student leaders.

Sulayman Jawo, social secretary of NAPSA, Mr. Musa Sanneh, a teacher at Pakalinding Upper Basic School all expressed similar sentiment over the programme.

NAPSA was established to bring all Gambian students under one umbrella body to effectively coordinate their activities and also to serve as a focal point for students in addressing some of their constraints in the academic struggle.
