Catonsville, MD - If you look at his Facebook postings you can see Antonio Martinez was a man in crisis and one with growing anger about the war in Afghanistan and what he saw as a war against Islam.
The quotes here are verbatim.
August.
"When are these crusaders gonna realize they can’t win? How many more lives are they willing to sacrafice."
September
"The sword is cummin the reign of opression is about 2 cease inshallah ta'ala YA muslimeen! dont execept the free world we are slaves of the Most High and never forget it!”
A friend tries to calm him down.
"Until that day comes Muhammad. Help those who are in need of help, volunteer at a food bank, tutor, or something Constructive. And give dawah by your example as a Muslim and Mu'min."
And October
"Do you really want to spend your entire lives praying for longevity? WE were born in order to die."
"Basically it's distressing you feel like here is one more American youth through an individual identity conflict has fallen victim to a radical ideology and we must fight this ideology."
Doctor Faheem Younus of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Center and MuslimsforPeace.org says the allegations against Martinez show there is a great misunderstanding about what Islam is about among Americans and even members of their own faith.
He's worked with thousands of Muslim American youth and many feel a rising tide of what he calls Islamophobia is oppressing them.
Younus says this means it's time all Muslims work to educate Americans about what Islam is really all about.
Peace.
“The solution is ABC, the C stands for communication you have to reach out and talk to people you can't sit back and expect things to happen themselves. B is brother hood for building communities and building bridges that's the B our communications must bring us together as a society we may not agree on ever single component of what we believe in and we must understand how to live together cohesively as a society, and A is the most important that if we call ourselves people of faith and this should be all for God.”
Younus says the bomb plot in Catonsville and the one last month in Portland, and the debate of the Islamic Community Center in near ground zero in New York City have reaped a wealth of negative press about their religion.
He says it's up to Muslims not only to educate, but to show their loyalty to a country that has given them so much.
“The youth in out community need to understand that simply denouncing terrorism is not enough anymore we must step up and pledge loyalty to this country it offers us equal rights.” Younus says.
Younus says he spends a lot of time talking with church groups and even holds seminars to help educate people about Islam and what it truly is.
He says this way he hopes to help people to understand that radical ideology does not speak for the Islamic community as a whole.
