It’s time to lace up your walking or running shoes and make a goal to participate in the 7th annual Run for Vaughan. This year’s run takes place May 29 and has something for everyone, including a 10-k run or a 3-k run or walk.
The run was started in 2003 by Vaughan’s Ahmadiyya Muslim community as a way to bring the community together while at the same time helping to raise money for the future Vaughan hospital.
The event has solidly grown over the past six years, with the event raising $300,000 for the Vaughan Health Care Foundation so far.
Organizers hope the run will grow even further becoming the premier running event and fundraiser for the hospital.
The race drew about 1,000 participants last year, but Asif Khan, a member of the run’s executive, is hopeful the event will grow in both participants and money raised.
“We’ve been coming in consistently around the $50,000 mark each year and we would like to see that number rise to between $75,000 to $100,000,” Mr. Khan said.
More than a run however, the day also has something for the whole family to enjoy including food vendors, cotton candy, characters from Canada’s Wonderland on site, a jumpy castle and pony rides for the children.
Local RBC Royal Bank branches around Vaughan have donation boxes and Run for Vaughan brochures set up for anyone interested in donating.
Mr. Khan encourages any other local businesses who might want to set up donation boxes to contact run organizers at the number below.
Residents can participate by walking or running or by pledging someone else participating in the event.
There are different ways to register for the event including online at http://www.events.runningroom.com until May 25, in person at the Vaughan Running Room until May 28 or in person on race day at the on-site registration tent. (Race day registration closes 30 minutes prior to each event).
Businesses or groups can register as a team. RBC, Future Shop, CIBC and AMJ Canada have already sponsored corporate teams.

The 10-k run starts at 8:30 a.m. and the 3-k run/walk starts at 10 a.m.
