The death toll in the Philippines is near 700 with almost 900 more missing after some areas were swept away by flash floods brought in by Tropical Storm Washi. Most victims were asleep Friday evening as the floods rushed through.
"These people need help now", the Chairman of Humanity First Canada is saying to Torontonians. That organization is doing all they can on this side of the ocean after sending a team of volunteers to Manila. Iligan City in Mindanao was one of the worst hit areas when typhoon Washi.
With over 1-hundred-thousand people affected by the floods, the organization is hoping Canadians step up to buy food, water, clothing and emergency supplies. Volunteers will be heading out to temporary shelters and government buildings to make sure supplies get to those who need them.
Mayor Lawrence Cruz of Iligan said the city's half a dozen parlours are full to capacity and no longer accepting bodies, which have been dug out from mud and debris littering much of the area. He says the first burial of 50 or so unclaimed bodies will take place later Monday in individual tombs.
