Two years after providing immediate disaster relief in Haiti after a catastrophic earthquake devastated the country, Humanity First says, it has sustained a presence and has been helping the communities to rebuild their country and their lives.
Humanity First is an international humanitarian relief organization that is focused in the areas of disaster response and human development.
Dr. Clayton Bell serves as Country Director to Haiti and has established several successful programs since 2010.
According to Humanity First website, the Cloud Forest Medical Clinic opened in June 2010 and the medical staff has served over 12,000 impoverished Haitians. During the cholera epidemic in 2011, a Cholera Treatment Center was established to save as many lives as possible.
The website says, in 2010, Kyle Martin developed the Community Health Workers Program, which is still running strongly in the local communities. The Community Health Workers (CHW) specialize in preventable disease, nutrition, sanitation education, and care for those with chronic illnesses. There are currently 8 CHW in the Seguin and Baie d’ Orange area providing health education to locals and taking care of disease patients suffering from hypertension.
In a country where most children do not continue school past sixth grade, says Humanity First website, there is a great need to invest in the youth and provide them with the hope of a better future.
"Recognizing this urgency, Humanity First is establishing a school in Seguin," the website further reported.
Construction is currently underway, and doors will soon open to support 183 students in the primary school. The school will be staffed with 13 full time Haitian employees.
Humanity First projects currently provide employment to 28 Haitians, and serve a population of over 50,000 that live in small farming communities spread across difficult mountainous terrain.
In the following video, Dr. Bell gives a preview of the Seguin school site when construction began in July 2010:
