Pakistan: Tribute paid to Prof Abdus Salam

One of Prof. Salam’s many concerns was education, both for primary levels and higher levels. He was concerned with the medium of instruction and the quality and standards of education being provided.

LAHORE – A presentation celebrating the life and achievements of Professor Abdus Salam was conducted at the Amjad Chaudhry Library. Dr. Shahid Amjad Chaudhry, Rector of the Lahore School of Economics greeted the speakers and audience for gathering together to honour Pakistan’s only Nobel Laureate, says a press release. Notable theoretical physicists came to speak about the Professor.

Dr. Shoaib Ahmad who holds the Rafi M. Chaudhry Chair at the Government College University, Lahore spoke of the contributions by Professor Abdus Salam to Pakistani science. Dr. Ahmad has been Member Science and Chief Scientist at the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, as well as being one of the leading Pakistani experimentalists, pioneering and establishing research labs for nanotechnology and accelerator physics.

Dr. Ahmad was followed by Dr. Tariq Abdullah, the Lahore School’s Faculty member and a theoretical physicist, who briefed the audience on Prof. Salam’s contribution towards Einstien’s lofty goal of trying to ‘Unify the diverse physical forces’ that govern the universe.

This was discussed by Dr. A. H. Nayyar, a widely published theorist, who is now associated with LUMS.
