We firmly believe promoting religious freedom will create true world peace. The prime minister has shown visionary leadership in creating this office at a time when so many around the world are subjected to religious persecution.

I would like to express the happiness and excitement that the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is feeling at Prime Minister Stephen Harper's launch of the Office of Religious Freedoms.

We are honoured that the announcement was made at the Aiwan Tahir Hall located at our national headquarters.

The Ahmadiyya community has experienced persecution based on religion. We firmly believe promoting religious freedom will create true world peace. The prime minister has shown visionary leadership in creating this office at a time when so many around the world are subjected to religious persecution.

Religious freedoms are being attacked globally, including Europe where: Almost 60 per cent of voters in Switzerland supported banning minarets; a leading anti-Islamic political party in Netherlands carries a mandate to outlaw Qur'an and tax Muslim women who wear head scarves; the French parliament banned the burka.

Countries such as Britain, Spain and Germany have also seen majority votes in support to ban the full Islamic veil which is a symbol of respect and dignity for all women.

Canada will now become a world leader in promoting religious freedom.
