Perspective: Canada's Syria approach right

"Justice requires that the developed nations put aside their vested interests, and instead help and serve the less developed and poorer nations with a truly selfless attitude and spirit."

Amidst the recent talks about military strikes in Syria the main talking point has been the securing of chemical weapons. World leaders, including President Obama are expressing outrage over Assad's use of Sarin gas. Though I applaud them for finally acknowledging the dire situation faced by innocent Syrians, what about the securing of justice? It seems that the fear of chemicals is overshadowing the bigger root issue.

A nation is being destroyed by its own leaders and a socalled revolutionary group of rebels. Caught in this crossfire for the quest of power are six million refugees and millions of civilians. I'm glad Canada has pledged over $100 million in aid to Syrians to fight the real issue at hand, not a military strike but a strike on humanity.

The Worldwide Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, speaking at the recent 10th annual Peace Symposium in London echoed the desire of all peace seeking individuals when he said, "Justice requires that the developed nations put aside their vested interests, and instead help and serve the less developed and poorer nations with a truly selfless attitude and spirit." It is my hope that Canada continues to lead the way in offering its support with this sentiment.
