On Monday, December 15, 2013, a delegation from the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community (AMC) of Guatemala met with Mr. Alvaro Arzu, the Mayor of Guatemala City, the capital and largest city of the Republic of Guatemala, and the most populous in Central America.

Mayor Arzu, who has been elected Mayor of Guatemala City on five occasions, is serving his third consecutive term.

Mayor Arzu has also served as the 32nd President of Guatemala from January 1996 to January 2000.

The Ahmadiyya delegation included, Maulana Naseem Mahdi, National Vice President, AMC-USA; Maulana Abdus Sattar Khan, National President, AMC-Guatemala; David Gonzalez, Executive Director, Humanity First - Guatemala; and Dr Waseem A Sayed, Country Director, Humanity First - Guatemala.

Mayor Arzu, who was responsible for signing the peace accord that ended a 36 year civil war in 1996, is easily the most well known political figure of Guatemala.

Dr Waseem A. Sayed, a member of the delegation visting Mayor's office in Guatemala City, said Mayor Arzu is always appreciative of the social works performed by the AMC and its affiliates.

"This has become a regular annual event for us and the Mayor," stated a report filed by Dr. Sayed from Guatemala City. "[He] always enjoys these meeting and it is always our party who decides to not take up more time of the Mayor."

The meeting with the Mayor came on the heels of 24th Annual Ahmadiyya Convention in Guatemala where the theme had centered on the peace efforts led by the worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Leader, His Holiness Mirza Masroor Ahmad, on the world stage.

The conversation with the Mayor also centered around the His Holiness' mission to insure world peace and on what the community may be able to do to continue growing its efforts in Guatemala to serve the people in need.
