UK: Local Ahmadiyya leader eases citizens' concerns over proposed minarets for mosque in Halesowen

“The dome and two minarets will really complete the mosque, like churches have spires, it creates their uniqueness. We fully respect other faiths and hope it is the same the other way.”

Plans to build two minarets and a central dome on top of the Long Lane Baitul Ghafoor mosque in Halesowen have been defended by the local Ahmadiyya Muslim community.

According to Halesowens News, a local newspaper, some residents and councillors "fear the proposed additions to the former Methodist church  will “stick out like a saw thumb”."

Dr Masood Majoka, local president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association, said the two minarets and dome would be “entirely in keeping and in proportion with the building,” it was reported by the newspaper.

“The dome and two minarets will really complete the mosque, like churches have spires, it creates their uniqueness. We fully respect other faiths and hope it is the same the other way,” Dr Majoka was quoted.

The newspaper reports that Dr Majoka acknowledged the association had said it had no plans to make external alterations at the time of the church conversion. "But added that such extensions had never been ruled out."

Additionally, Dr Majoka promised the building would “maintain its grandeur” and the colour of the dome, although not decided, would match the colour of the brickwork.

Cllr Shakespeare expressed he is sending the council a formal objection along with Halesowen North UKIP councillor Stuart Henley, saying the proposals as “excessive.”

“I have personally worked with the mosque on community work and they do great work in the area," Cllr Shakespeare acknowledged.
