Perspective: Stop the persecution | Letter

By law, Ahmadi Muslims can be imprisoned for merely saying “salam” (peace) in Pakistan. Ahmadi Muslims are not allowed to preach their beliefs, nor are they allowed to use Islamic terminology.

Re: Pakistanis Kill Ahmadis Over Facebook Rumour, July 29.

The situation of minority communities in Pakistan continues to deteriorate. On Sunday, eight Ahmadi homes were set ablaze by a mob, while the police mercilessly watched the massacre unfold, resulting in three deaths. The deceased include a grandmother and her granddaughters, aged seven and eight months. A pregnant woman also suffered a miscarriage due to smoke inhalation. In addition to the deceased, eight other Ahmadi Muslim women and children have been injured.

The persecution of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community in Pakistan is state sanctioned. By law, Ahmadi Muslims can be imprisoned for merely saying “salam” (peace) in Pakistan. Ahmadi Muslims are not allowed to preach their beliefs, nor are they allowed to use Islamic terminology. In May, a leading Canadian-American Ahmadi cardiologist, Dr. Mehdi Ali, was killed in Pakistan, while he was volunteering in a hospital. I urge the international community to speak out against the anti-Ahmadi laws in Pakistan that have tarnished the very fabric of Pakistani society.
