Canada: Edmonton Ahmadi Muslim women join in the #JeSuisHijabi campaign

"We do it because we love it. We love our god, we want to follow the commandments of our god and we want to be modest and prevent society from social ills."

Local Muslim women are joining with others across the country to shed light on why they wear the hijab with the #JeSuisHijabi campaign.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Women's Association Edmonton held an open house at the Baitul Hadi mosque at 7005 98 Avenue on Sunday and plan to hold "try on a hijab" events at the University of Alberta Student's Union building on Monday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and at Telus building at 10020 100 Street NW from 9 a.m. to noon.

Nudrat Mansoor says she respects Canadian values and is asking for the same respect.

For her, the hijab is an outward expression of her faith and love of her god as well as a symbol of modesty.

"It's more than a piece of cloth," Mansoor said.

The biggest misconception is that the hijab is a symbol of oppression, she said. Rather than being oppressed, Mansoor called the hijab empowering.

"We do it because we love it," she said. "We love our god, we want to follow the commandments of our god and we want to be modest and prevent society from social ills."

Following terrorist attacks in Paris on Nov. 13 and in San Bernardino, California on Wednesday, discrimination became worse.

Mansoor says she has experienced cases where she is sitting on the LRT and people move to avoid sitting next to her.

She said she wants to promote peace and harmony between everyone.

"It's my choice to wear a hijab and I think I should be respected for that," Mansoor said.

She added terrorism has no religion and it's up to everyone to work together to promote peace and respect.

"Acceptance and diversity are core Canadian values that we should strive to embrace and live by. This campaign allows for Canadians to come together and engage in peaceful public dialogue to foster a better understanding of the Islamic faith," said Amtul Noor Daud, national president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Women's Association.
