This Muslim-American mourns two tragedies in just the last two weeks. The most recent was the horrific shooting at a nightclub in Orlando last weekend.

The perpetrator took innocent civilians hostage and then went on to murder them. Figuratively, he tried to do the same to the name of Islam. He should have known that the Quran condemns his actions as being barbaric and wholly un-Islamic.

The second tragedy was the death of legendary heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali, who was both a hero for the downtrodden and an inspiration for all. Note that he attributed his huge successes and humanitarian drive to his Muslim faith.

Like Ali, Muslims in America and worldwide need to win back their faith by speaking out against abuses carried out in its name and by practicing the true, peaceful, tolerant Islam. Only then will our mourning have become meaningful.
