The man who is favourite to become President of France next year has called for Islam to be “controlled” and for the banning of  movements affiliated to Salafism and the Muslim Brotherhood.

In a speech to his supporters last week Francois Fillon pledged to fight radical Islam if he is elected.

He said: “I want our relations with Saudi Arabia and Qatar – which shelter radical Islamic thinkers – to be clarified.”

Fillon said that the “extremism that is setting the Muslim world alight” is a threat to French society

“We must fight the risk of a world war provoked by Islamic totalitarianism which is comparable with Nazism,” he said. “It is spreading from the south of Asia to West Africa and to win this war we need a lot of effort and allies, and among these allies will be Russia.”

François Fillon served as Prime Minister of France from 2007 to 2012 and is the current nominee of The Republicans, the largest centre-right political party, for the 2017 presidential election.
