Perspective: Badly chosen words are all I have to push your heart away

Christians and Muslims have had a history of animosity and as it stands a Muslim would not like being called a Christian, nor will indeed a Christian like to be called a Muslim.

Some time ago, some attention seekers came up with yet another mischief, they put up a billboard saying “Jesus is Muslim”. This event and the controversy it caused is amply covered in:

‘Jesus is Muslim’ billboards stirring controversy among Christians

Reading about this “billboard event”, all I could think of was a doctored line of an old song: It’s only words and badly chosen words are all I have to push your heart away! The fact is in the terminology of the Quran, all those who believe in ONE GOD and do what is right, submitting to the will of God are Muslims, without any restriction on time, or creed. So righteous humans who believe in God, were are and will be Muslim and Jesus was a righteous human.

Though, as a Muslim, it is my belief that Jesus (pbuh) was a righteous person who not only believed in God but also had a special link with Him and hence he could be called a Muslim, I would refrain from calling him a Muslim.

Why would I go against my beliefs to do that? Simply because Christians and Muslims have had a history of animosity and as it stands a Muslim would not like being called a Christian, nor will indeed a Christian like to be called a Muslim. In such an atmosphere spelling out what is right according to one party and totally unacceptable to another party is stirring up mischief and Quran repudiates mischief mongers in no uncertain terms.

On the other hand, if a Muslim insists on calling Jesus a Muslim, then, according to the Quran, Muhammad, along with his true followers, is a Christian and a Jew. For according to the Quran Muhammad and all his followers believe in earlier prophets and books. Now a believer in Jesus and Bible is called, nowadays, a Christian and a believer in Torah and Moses is called a Jew. So, what say you about Muhammad and all his followers?

The verse of the Quran that I have in my mind says:

آمن الرسول بما أنزل إليه من ربه والمؤمنون كل آمن بالله وملائكته وكتبه ورسله لا نفرق بين أحد من رسله وقالوا سمعنا وأطعنا غفرانك ربنا وإليك المصير۔۔ البقرۃ 285 )

Translation: This Messenger of Ours believes in that which has been revealed to him from his Lord, and so do the believers: all of them believe in Allah, and in His angels, and in His Books, and in His Messengers, saying, ‘We make no distinction between any of His Messengers;’ and they say, ‘We hear, and we obey. We implore Thy forgiveness, O our Lord, and to Thee is the returning.
