“And if Allah had enforced His will, He would surely have made you all one people” Holy Quran [16:94].

Religion lately is often misconstrued and perceived to lead toward the division of society. And while differences and diversity among people living together should be recognized and welcomed as part of God’s plan, groups such as ISIS seek to divide us with their extremist rhetoric.

To combat the extremist interpretations of Islam, the “True Islam and the Extremists” campaign began its nationwide effort in December. The goal of this nonsectarian campaign is to dispel the myths extremists use to distort the truth about Islam, and radicalize innocent minds. The True Islam campaign educates both Muslims and non-Muslims in understanding the 11 fundamental principles of Islam and provides an opportunity to accurately share Islam's beliefs.

Recently, seven members of Congress, along with a representative from the State Department, joined to support the campaign and its 11-point challenge against extremism.

Here in Virginia, the Woodbridge chapter of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community officially launched the True Islam campaign on March 6 with a seminar for residents of Prince William County and neighboring areas.

This seminar aimed to bring residents together by uniting against extremism. More than 250 participants -- men, women, children-- attended the seminar. The event started with a moment of silence, paying tribute to Ashley Guindon of Prince William, who was shot and killed on her first shift as a police officer. Guests at the event included the chairman of the Prince William Board of Supervisors, Corey Stewart, Occoquan District Supervisor Ruth Anderson and Prince William police Assistant Chief Kevin Hughart.

The campaign advocates that religion is a driving force meant to unite all people and should allow for freedom of conscience. This belief stems from the Holy Quran, which clarifies that “There is no compulsion in religion” (2:257).

By respecting our religious and ideological differences, the campaign hopes that dialogue will foster the consensus that Islam, like any other faith, is inherently peaceful and has its rightful place in America.

For those who missed the event, we welcome you to learn more and endorse the campaign at TrueIslam.com.
