LAHORE: Justice Azmat Saeed of the Lahore High Court (LHC), on Thursday, while hearing a petition requesting the imposition of permanent ban on the social networking website Facebook, for again holding an objectionable and blasphemous contest called `2nd Annual Draw Muhammad Day-May 20, 2011’ summoned complete record of all the previous petitions.
The judge ordered for production of the previous petitions till May 10.
Muhammad & Ahmed, a public interest litigation company, through its chairman Muhammad Azhar Siddique, moved the petition.
The petitioner stated that the government should be directed to establish a permanent authority, having legal status, entrusted with the task of monitoring objectionable and blasphemous activities against Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and other holy personalities of other religions across the world and ban them forever.
He also sought directions from the court for the federal government to stop display of material pertaining to blasphemy of any religion or holy prophets on Facebook and all other such websites in Pakistan. He requested that Facebook and other websites be permanently blocked/banned in Pakistan for airing, placing, visualising caricatures of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and permanently restrained from committing blasphemy in the future.
He also pleaded to the court that Civil Lines police station SHO be directed to register a criminal case against the perpetrators under Section 295-C and other relevant provisions of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) for holding a fresh competition.
The petitioner, earlier, had moved a petition on which a case was lodged against the administration of the Facebook and the court had directed the government to ensure strict check on the display of material hurting the religious sentiments of people. staff report
