KITCHENER — Members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim faith will be knocking on doors and distributing flyers about peace in the Stanley Park neighbourhood of Kitchener on Sunday.

The campaign is part of a national day of spreading the peaceful message of Islam, said Nabeel Rana of the Kitchener-Waterloo branch of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at.

More than 100 neighbourhoods across Canada will have Ahmadiyya Muslims knocking on doors talking about Islam.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim tradition started about 122 years ago in India by Hadrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad. The Ahmadiyyas see their founder as the Messiah, while most Muslims see Prophet Muhammed as their prophet.

Rana of Waterloo said the purpose of the event is to dispel myths and misconceptions about Islam.

“The peaceful face of Islam has been hijacked by extremists, fundamentalists and terrorists,’’ he said. “These are not the teachings of Islam.’’

Rana said Islam believes in equality and justice for all faiths and religions.

He said about 100 people will participate in the local campaign, including men, women and children.

“We want to remove the negativity out there ... especially with (al-Qaida leader Osama) bin Laden being killed, people are wondering about Islam,’’ he said.
