Research: Islam on pace to become world's largest religion, study says

Muslims tend to have more children than people from other major religions and also have the youngest median age, according to the study.

Islam is poised to be the fastest growing religion in the world, according to a new study from Pew Research.

Muslims are projected to grow more than twice as fast as the global population between 2015 and 2060 -- a 70 percent increase compared to 32 percent respectively, the study said.

Pew Research predicts that the Muslim population will increase from 1.8 billion in 2015 to about 3 billion in 2060. Growth will boom in every region, except Latin America and the Caribbean where Muslim numbers are lower.

Muslims tend to have more children than people from other major religions and also have the youngest median age, according to the study.

As the global Muslim population grows, Pew's study said it will surpass the global Christian population, which is currently the world's largest religion. Other religions, including Hinduism and Judaism, will see moderate growth during the same period.

There were an estimated 3.3 million Muslims in the United States in 2015, according to previous Pew Research findings. That makes up about 1 percent of the total U.S. population.

New Jersey is one of the states that have as much as three times more Muslim adults per capita as the national average.

    Islam is a Religion of Love and Peace The definition of Islam. The root of the word Islam, silm, refers to "making peace, being in a mutually peaceful environment.
